Unified Socialist elects office bearers
Ram Kumari Jhakri loses vice-chairperson race under women’s category.Post Report
The CPN (Unified Socialist) on Tuesday elected its office bearers through a voting in Kathmandu.
Gangalal Tuladhar, Bhanu Bhakta Joshi, Prakash Jwala, and Jagannath Khatiwada were elected vice-chairpersons under open category. Tuladhar received 189 votes, Khatiwada 161, Joshi 156, and Jwala 139.
The Unified Socialist Party has a provision for electing four vice-chairpersons under the open category out of six vice-chairpersons.
In the women’s vice-chairperson category, Jayanti Rai defeated Ram Kumari Jhakri. Rai secured 199 votes, while Jhakri managed only 112. Likewise, Dharmanath Prasad Sah was elected vice-chairperson under the Madheshi category, receiving 164 votes, while his rival Ram Chandra Jha garnered 144 votes.
Metmani Chaudhary, Rajendra Kumar Rai, Ram Kumar Bhattarai, and Garima Shah were elected deputy general secretaries. Chaudhary received 158 votes, Bhattarai and Shah each garnered 107 votes, and Rai got 106 votes.
Likewise, Baldev Chaudhary from the indigenous category and Ganesh Bishwakarma from the Dalit category were elected secretaries. Chaudhary received 175 votes, and Bishwakarma got 180 votes.
Similarly, Sher Bahadur Kunwar, Som Prasad Pandey, Chandra Bahadur Shahi, Sabitra Bhusal, and Shreenath Baral were elected as secretaries under the open category. Kunwar received 153 votes, Pandey 141, Bhusal 106, and Shahi 91.
The elections for these positions were held among central committee members. Rajendra Pandey was elected unopposed as the senior vice-chairperson.
The party’s general convention, held in Kathmandu from June 30 to July 5, unanimously elected Madhav Kumar Nepal as chairman, Ghanashyam Bhusal as general secretary, and Jhala Nath Khanal as senior leader.
The party’s central committee members voted to elect the office bearers on Tuesday, two months after the general convention.
The party’s statute mentions that it will have 21 office bearers.
After the general convention unanimously elected the chairman and general secretary, the office bearers were expected to be appointed based on consensus. However, party insiders said leaders close to Chairman Nepal lobbied hard to hold an election for office bearers.
