Heavy monsoon rain triggered deadly landslides in different parts of the country, killing two people, injuring another, and disrupting traffic along the Nepal-China border on Monday.
In Dolakha, a four-month-old infant died, and her mother was seriously injured after they were struck by a landslide while returning home from the maternal family’s house.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 9pm on Sunday at Kyampol in ward 1 of Kalinchok Rural Municipality.
The infant died while being taken to Dhulikhel Hospital in Dolakha. Her 19-year-old mother, Sharmila Thami, sustained serious injuries and has been referred to Kathmandu for further treatment.
In Jajarkot, a 60-year-old woman died after a landslide buried a temporary shelter in Bheri Municipality-2, Rangsi.
District Police Office, Jajarkot said the incident occurred at around 8:30pm on Sunday after continuous rainfall triggered a landslide from above the settlement.
The victim, Jayashila Shah, died at the scene. Her daughter, 40-year-old Menuka Shah Thapa, and her seven-year-old granddaughter, Tika Thapa, were rescued safely by residents.
Meanwhile, heavy rain also disrupted cross-border trade with China after part of the Kodari Highway subsided at the Eco section in ward 2 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok, forcing the closure of the Tatopani border point on Monday.
The road caved in by about two metres following continuous rainfall on Sunday evening, halting vehicular movement along the route.
The highway had already been affected on Sunday after a landslide struck Liping Bazaar, damaging a cargo container and temporarily obstructing traffic.
Kumar Shrestha, ward 2 chair of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, said coordination had been established with the Charikot Road Division Office, and efforts to clear the road were underway despite persistent rain.
The closure has left dozens of cargo containers waiting on the Chinese side after completing customs procedures.
The Eco section has repeatedly suffered road subsidence during the monsoon in recent years, frequently disrupting traffic on the Kodari Highway and operations at the Tatopani border crossing.
