The government has appointed Gunakar Bhatta as the vice-chair of the National Planning Commission (NPC).
Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal said the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Bhatta replaces Prakash Kumar Shrestha, who held the post under the Sushila Karki-led interim government.
In the same meeting, the Cabinet appointed Kiran Pandit as deputy governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).
Bhatta’s move to the NPC follows his retirement from the central bank. Under NRB regulations, an executive director must retire after completing seven years in the position.
The central bank’s rules also mandate retirement after 30 years of service, upon reaching the age of 58, or after completing fixed tenures in senior roles—12 years for senior directors and seven years for executive directors.
Bhatta holds a PhD in economics.
