The Election Commission (EC) has received complaints against several candidates, including former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Nagarik Unmukti Party leader Resham Chaudhary, who have registered nominations for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
The commission said objections have been lodged against former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Resham Lal Chaudhary and other candidates, challenging their eligibility to contest the election.
Nepal, former prime minister and Nepali Communist Party leader, has filed his candidacy from Rautahat–1. A complaint against him claims that he is ineligible to stand for election as a corruption case related to the Patanjali land scam is currently under consideration at the Special Court.
Similarly, a complaint has been registered against Resham Chaudhary, the Nagarik Unmukti Party candidate from Kailali–1. Chaudhary was convicted by the Supreme Court in connection with the Tikapur killings, although he was later released after receiving a presidential pardon.
The commission also confirmed that complaints have been filed against Rastriya Swatantra Party candidates Lalbikram Thapa from Sunsari–2 and Rajiv Khatri from Bhaktapur–2, as well as Januka Pathak, a candidate of the Nepal Jansewa Party from Bhaktapur–2.
Suman Ghimire, spokesperson at the commission, said the time for filing complaints was fixed from 10 am to 3 pm on Wednesday. During this period, two complaints were registered in Bhaktapur, and one each in Rautahat, Sunsari and Kailali.
He added that the commission is expected to complete preliminary scrutiny of the complaints by Thursday.
