Prakash Saput steps from stage to politics with RSP
Says his entry into politics is motivated by responsibility, not ambition.Post Report
Singer and actor Prakash Saput has been included in the Rastriya Swatantra Party’s (RSP) closed proportional representation list for the House of Representatives elections. The party submitted the names of 110 candidates, including Saput, to the Election Commission on Monday.
Speaking to the Post, the 35-year-old said he has joined politics to understand parliamentary processes up close and take responsibility for national development. “As an artist, I have often raised questions about social and political issues. Now I want to go beyond questions and act directly,” he said.
Saput explained that he has long observed that leaders are not always honest in parliament and wanted to witness the process firsthand. “At this stage in life, an artist’s energy can drift toward frustration. I thought, why not channel it toward the country?” he said.
He said his entry into politics is motivated by responsibility, not ambition, and by the belief that politics should not be seen as a ‘dirty game.’ Saput cited Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah’s energy and his political leap as inspiration, adding that he also sees potential in new forces led by Shah and RSP chair Rabi Lamichhane to implement reforms effectively.
Although informally involved in political discussions since RSP’s rise, Saput prioritised family and art until the Gen Z movement drew his attention. “I realised it was our time to participate, to support a new force that won’t allow the country to be mismanaged,” he said.
He plans to balance politics with his artistic career. His film Mirmire is set for release soon, followed by Paralko Aago in the Nepali New Year. Active in music for 15 years, Saput is known for songs like Galbandi, Pir, Sakambari, Dohori Battle, Bol Maya, and Damai Maharaja.
