Nagdhunga–Malekhu road to close for five hours daily
Traffic will be disturbed until Tuesday as narrow stretches and heavy machinery require temporary stoppages; commuters are advised to use alternative routes.Bimal Khatiwada
The Nagdhunga–Naubise–Malekhu section will be partially closed for five hours daily until Tuesday to allow resurfacing and upgrading work. Although work began with partial closure from December 10, the road was temporarily reopened on December 12 and 13 after complaints that the closure would affect the CPN-UML general convention.
A team from the Youth Association affiliated with the CPN-UML met Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Kulman Ghising, requesting a temporary lift to the closure. Following the meeting, resurfacing work was suspended for two days, and traffic was allowed to resume.
The Department of Roads has prioritised resurfacing the Nagdhunga–Piplamode section within Kathmandu district. According to Keshav Prasad Ojha, chief of the Eastern Section of the Nagdhunga–Muglin Road Project, this section is narrow, and multiple heavy machinery and transport vehicles need to operate simultaneously, necessitating temporary traffic stoppages. Work will now continue as per the pre-planned daily schedule.
Due to narrow and risky stretches at the Galchhi–Gajuri section in Dhading and the need to widen roads near Pokharebhir, traffic will be closed from 10:30am to 3:30pm until Tuesday. The project office has requested commuters to use alternative routes.
Emergency vehicles, including ambulances, security forces, fire trucks, and hearse services, will be allowed to pass in coordination with the traffic police.
Vehicles heading from Kathmandu to Naubise will be stopped at the Nagdhunga checkpost, while vehicles coming from Muglin to Kathmandu will be halted at Khanikhola, Naubise, Jangekhola, and Thakre.
Vehicles moving from Naubise to Muglin will be stopped at Galchhi, Baireni, and Mastar, while those from Muglin to Naubise will be held at Malekhu.
Small and medium vehicles can use alternative routes, including Sitapaila–Ramkot–Bhimdunga–Dharke and Samakhusi–Tokha–Chhahare–Trishuli (Bidur)–Galchhi, and the Trishuli Bridge at Jarekhet to cross to Ghatbeshi.
