Heavy snowfall hit Manang district late Monday night, starting around 9:30pm, and continued into Tuesday morning.
Snow is reported from Pisang (3,200 m) to the higher regions of Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality.
Chief District Officer Navaraj Paudel said Tilicho and Thorong La have received the heaviest snowfall, with thick snow observed from Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp. “It is raining at the district headquarters in Chame, while upper areas have seen snow since 9:30pm,” he said.
Authorities have instructed trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit heading towards Tilicho and Thorong La to halt at their current locations until the snowfall stops. About 800–1,000 Nepali tourists are at Tilicho Base Camp, while most trekkers towards Thorong La are foreigners. Upper Manang hosts around 1,500 Nepali tourists, with 300 at Chame. Contact with Narpa Bhumi has not been possible. “Tourists aiming to climb Himlung in Narpa Bhumi are staying at base camps,” Paudel added.
Prakash Adhikari, a ranger with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) in Manang, said snowfall is occurring from lower Pisang to upper areas, following rain on Monday evening. He warned that travelling during snowfall is unsafe and urged tourists to remain at their current locations until the weather clears.
Manang has seen about 200 foreign visitors daily over the past week, with 1,000–1,500 foreigners currently in upper Manang. The administration issued a notice on Monday advising travel only after checking weather conditions. Paudel requested tourists to contact authorities if rescue assistance becomes necessary.
