Two old socket bombs were discovered in an abandoned state within the premises of Bhagawati Secondary School on Monday afternoon in Nuwagaun, Triveni Rural Municipality-2, near Dahaban of Rolpa district.
The explosives were uncovered while workers were digging the ground to lay the foundation for a new school building.
The Nepal Police reported that the bombs, suspected to be from the time of the Maoist insurgency, were identified around 12:45 pm. Following the discovery, security personnel from the Nuwagaun Police Post and the Area Police Office in Holeri arrived at the scene.
A specialised bomb disposal team from the Surya Dal Battalion based in Libang, led by Army Commander Shankar Thapa, safely defused the two bombs on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Inspector Bijay Chapagain, spokesperson for the District Police Office, the bombs may have been left during the conflict period, as Dahaban once hosted the headquarters of the Maoist Fifth Division.
Following the peace accord signed in November 2006, the area also temporarily housed a Nepal Army unit.
