Martyrs’ Day was observed nationwide today, with people across the country paying heartfelt tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy.
The day, marked on Magh 16 in the Nepali lunar calendar, honours the brave martyrs who fought for people’s rights and freedoms during various movements throughout Nepal's history. In particular, the country remembers Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha, who were executed by the autocratic Rana regime for their efforts to bring about democratic change 84 years ago. These four iconic figures are considered the pillars of people’s struggle for democratic rights.
Even though they were given a choice either to give up and survive or to get executed, the four martyrs chose to sacrifice themselves for the cause of democracy instead of surrendering to the autocratic regime.
As part of the commemorations, tributes were paid at various places, including the Martyrs' Memorial at Lainchaur and the Shahid Gate in Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli led the main ceremony, laying wreaths at the statues of the martyrs to honour their contribution to the country’s democratic journey. The ceremony was attended by a host of prominent figures, including the deputy prime minister, ministers, and members of the political parties.
In addition to the capital, similar functions were organised to pay tribute to the martyrs in different parts of the country, including a special event at Pulimrang in Tanahun, where President Ramchandra Paudel visited the martyr’s park and laid a wreath in memory of the heroes of the area. The President was also urged by the martyrs’ memorial fund committee to contribute to the development of the park, with plans to allocate Rs150 million for its comprehensive development.
Nepal continues to observe Martyrs’ Week from Magh 10-16, a period dedicated to reflecting on the contributions of these national heroes. The government has declared today, Martyrs’ Day, a public holiday, in remembrance of their sacrifices and in honour of their pivotal role in the country’s struggle for democracy.
