The Parliamentary Hearing Committee on Wednesday endorsed the name of Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal as Nepal’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
A meeting of the committee unanimously endorsed her name after she presented her plans. Lamsal is the country’s first female foreign secretary.
A Cabinet meeting on August 15 recommended her name for the ambassadorial position.
Article 292 of the constitution requires the chief justice, justices, and those nominated to constitutional commissions and ambassadorial posts to pass parliamentary hearings before they take the oath of the positions. President Ramchandra Paudel will now appoint her to the position.
During a parliamentary hearing, Lamsal presented her plans to showcase Nepal's transitional justice achievements to improve the country’s image internationally.
She highlighted her aim to increase awareness about Nepal’s peace process among European countries, noting that such promotion would positively impact Nepal’s global standing.
Lamsal, who has also been recommended as the non-resident ambassador to Luxembourg and the Netherlands, outlined additional priorities, including expanding Nepal's exports, securing development assistance, promoting tourism and pursuing high-income employment opportunities for Nepalis in the European markets.
Her plan includes engaging with non-resident Nepalis to attract foreign investment, advancing economic diplomacy, and enhancing Nepal’s soft power through public engagements in the host countries.
Lamsal said she would work to strengthen bilateral mechanisms and foster people-to-people ties to enhance Nepal’s influence and diplomatic relations in the region.
