The government has stepped up efforts to restore electricity and transport links in areas devastated by the August 26 floods in the Bhotekoshi river, with power supplies restored to more communities in Nuwakot and a temporary bridge being installed to reopen a key road.

Electricity was restored on Tuesday to wards 10 and 11 of Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot district, as well as Tarkeshwar-4, according to Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha.

About 83 percent of electricity services in Rasuwa and 95 percent in Nuwakot have now been restored, Shrestha said.

The ministry began restoration work immediately after the floods, mobilising available personnel and resources and using alternative arrangements where the disaster had severely damaged electricity infrastructure.

For communities where grid power remains unavailable, the government is also distributing solar systems through the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre. Solar systems with a capacity of up to 2 kilowatts are being provided to community shelters, while individual systems are being distributed to households according to need.

Teams from the Nepal Electricity Authority and the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre remain deployed in the affected areas to repair damaged infrastructure and restore services, Shrestha said.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Army has accelerated work to install a 60-metre temporary steel bridge over the Tadi river at Devighat in Bidur, Nuwakot. The permanent bridge at the site was washed away by the August 26 floods, cutting a key transport link.

The temporary bridge is being built using the existing supports on both sides of the destroyed bridge. Installation began three days ago and is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

The army has supplied the materials and equipment and is carrying out the construction with its own technical team. Once installation is complete, engineers will conduct technical tests before reopening the route to traffic.
