A group of 13 lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party registered a motion of urgent public importance at the federal parliament calling for a discussion on growing air accidents in Nepal.
RSP lawmaker Sobita Gautam submitted the proposal while 12 other lawmakers from her party seconded it.
The proposal seeks to initiate deliberations in the House of Representatives on measures to improve air safety in the country. The lawmakers stated that the aviation regulator and air service providers have not been held accountable despite repeated crashes.
The proposal stressed the need for holding the relevant authorities accountable.
Stating that the reports of various investigation committees are rarely made public and the recommendations are never taken for implementation, the motion called for a parliamentary discussion on splitting the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal into two separate entities—a regulatory body and a service provider.
Twenty three people lost their lives in two aviation accidents in an interval of 15 days in Nepal recently. In its 71 years of aviation history, Nepal has seen 109 air accidents.
