Floods, landslides and inundation triggered by heavy monsoon rains continued in various places in the country on Tuesday as well.
Hundreds of houses were inundated in several Tarai districts while landslides disrupted transportation in some hill districts.
An eight-year-old girl died while her mother sustained injuries when a landslide buried a house at Triyuga Municipality-15 of Udayapur district on Tuesday morning. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajan Chapagain, Rupkala Magar was buried to death while her mother Hira Kumari Magar, 30, sustained injuries when a landslide struck their house. According to Chapagain, around 15 houses in the area are at risk of landslides.
In Jhapa, around 50 houses were inundated in various settlements of Gaurigunj and Jhapa rural municipalities due to the floods in the Kankai river. According to the District Police Office in Jhapa, Tapugaun of Jhapa-1 was greatly affected. The affected people were shifted to safer locations, said police.
Similarly in Mahottari, around 100 houses at wards 2 and 14 of Bardibas Municipality were inundated due to heavy rains. The integrated Musahar settlement and other settlements nearby were inundated as the floods of the local stream entered the settlements. Likewise, 16 families were shifted to safe locations after floods in the Triyuga river entered the human settlement in Saptakoshi Municipality-2, Saptari.
Meanwhile, the flooded Marsyangdi river breached a concrete embankment wall built at Taalgaun of Naso Rural Municipality-1 in Manang district. The floods damaged the wall on Tuesday morning leaving 61 houses at high risk of flooding. According to Buddhi Bahadur Gurung, a local, the flooded river breached a 30-metre wall while another 60-metre-long wall is on the verge of collapse.
In Dolakha, 14 domestic tourists, who trekked to Tsho-Rolpa glacial lake, have been stranded in the Rolwaling area for the past five days. The flooded Rolwaling river washed away a footbridge and two wooden bridges, while a landslide blocked the trekking route.
Their rescue has been further delayed due to inclement weather. Tourists have been stranded in Na due to a massive landslide between Na and Beding, a tourist village in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9 of Dolakha district.
Dawa Tshering Sherpa, a local hotelier, said 14 people have been stranded due to the landslide. “A huge landslide occurred on the trekking route between Beding and Na,” he said. “We have requested the authorities to rescue us urgently as the village is running out of food.”
He said the government had been requested to rescue the locals or transport food immediately, as Beding is also facing the same situation.
Chair of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality Biswas Karki said they were working to ensure food supply to the area.
“The locals have reported that there is now a stock of food grains available in Beding for a week,” said Karki. "We have prepared food grains for one-and-a-half months to be transported by helicopter, as the trekking route has been damaged and bridges washed away.”
He mentioned difficulties in rescuing stranded tourists and transporting food grains, noting that helicopters were unable to fly due to adverse weather conditions.
