The official Twitter account of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s office–PMO Nepal (@PM_nepal_)–was hacked on Thursday.
According to Dahal’s personal secretary Ramesh Malla, the account was breached by hackers for some time but the Twitter handle has now been recovered.
Although the account has been reinstated, tweets related to the digital currency that was posted by the hackers have not been removed.
The hackers had changed the name of the account to ‘Blur’ and had posted some tweets related to digital currency from the account.
On January 28, hundreds of government websites went down for hours in one of the largest cyberattacks in any country, exposing Nepal’s vulnerable cyber infrastructure. The hacking resulted in disruptions of hundreds of government websites across the country which also hit international travel due to the shutdown of the immigration server.
According to Ramesh Prasad Pokharel, assistant director at the National Information Technology Centre (NITC) under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology around 1,500 government websites were shut down due to cyberattacks on the government’s only central data bank at the Government Integrated Data Centre (GIDC), which is managed by the NITC at Singha Durbar, the government’s main administrative centre.
