New House regulations pave the way for virtual meetings

A meeting of the House of Representatives can be held virtually as per a provision in new proposed regulations.
A meeting of the Regulations Drafting Committee has made agreements for holding the meeting of the lower house even if lawmakers are not present physically.
“If at least one-fourth of members of the lower house agree that it is not possible to hold a meeting in physical presence due to a natural disaster or pandemic and inform the Speaker of the same, then the meeting can be held through virtual means using technology in consultation with the Business Advisory Committee,” reads the new provision.
The procedure of such a meeting will be determined by the Speaker.
The committee will present the regulations to the Parliament for endorsement.
Although lawmakers had raised their voices for holding virtual meetings during the Covid-19 pandemic, the meetings couldn’t take place for lack of necessary provisions.
