Police have arrested a man on charges of online harassment of Sapana Roka Magar, the 19-year-old crematorium technician who was featured on the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women of 2020.
SSP Ashok Singh, chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, said Binay Jung Basnet was arrested from New Bus Park area in Kathmandu at around 5pm on Tuesday, following a complaint lodged by Magar.
“Magar had lodged a complaint against Basnet on Sunday for misbehaviour and online harassment,” said Singh. “We have started the investigation.”
Originally from Myagdi district, Magar, who has been involved in cremating unclaimed bodies, was among the list of 100 inspiring and influential women prepared by the BBC last year.
A few days ago, a video of Basnet threatening to make public nude photos and videos of Magar had gone viral on social media.
Basnet and Magar were earlier involved with the same organisation that handles the cremation of unclaimed bodies.
