Over murky details, Oli’s health raises questions about his fitness to govern
Over the past 24 hours, there has been much speculation and conjecture about Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s health. Ever since Oli was admitted to Grande International Hospital on Wednesday morning, little information has been forthcoming from the government authorities.
But on Thursday, a medical doctor who has been monitoring Oli’s health told the Post that the prime minister had undergone a second procedure for urethral dilation on Wednesday due to difficulties in passing urine.
The doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t allowed to speak on prime minister’s health, also confirmed that Oli had undergone two rounds of dialysis during his stay at Grande, despite much speculation and a lack of information from officials and attending doctors.
“I thought I would die”
The beating was so brutal that Vibha Rana was left with deep cuts above her left eye that needed multiple stitches. Her face was dripping with blood and she couldn’t see clearly as her vision was blurred by the beating. All she felt was a throbbing pain in her head.
This wasn’t the first time her husband’s merciless thrashing had landed her in the hospital. In their nearly 40 years of marriage, they had frequented couples counselling but she was also a regular at numerous emergency rooms and operation theatres, sometimes battered by her husband’s rage and other times, by her adult son’s. In the past, she would’ve gone back home, cried alone in a dark room. The next day, she would wake up and slip back into everyday life, hiding the pain under a big, bright smile and the bruises underneath layers of makeup—only to be beaten again.
Chargesheet filed against Mahara for rape attempt
The District Government Attorney Office, Kathmandu on Thursday filed a chargesheet against Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former speaker of the House of Representatives, at Kathmandu District court, demanding five to seven-and-a-half years in jail for a rape attempt on a woman who works at the Parliament Secretariat.
Mahara was arrested on October 6, two days after the woman lodged an attempt to rape complaint with police.
Confusion in local governments threatens to derail federal government’s total literacy plan
The government has decided to make Nepal a fully literate country by the end of next fiscal year. Presenting the government’s policies and programmes before the federal parliament in May, President Bidya Devi Bhandari announced that illiteracy would be eliminated from the country within two years, adopting the literacy drive.
Primarily, the local governments conduct literacy classes through the community learning centres that have been established in almost every ward. However, the local representatives are not clear over their roles in the government’s ambitious plan.
Pokhara-Muglin highway to be widened to four lanes
Pokhara's main highway connecting it to the outside world is being widened to four lanes, almost five decades since the route opened.
The widening of the 81-kilometre Pokhara-Muglin highway is expected to improve access for the lake city to international markets like India and Bangladesh.
Pokhara, the gateway to the world-famous Annapurna circuit trekking destination, will also have an international airport by mid-2021. The city is the staging point for trekkers and mountaineers headed for the Himalaya.
