Construction of cobblestone path around Jagadishpur Lake raises concern of biodiversity loss
The Department of Tourism has started to construct a path around Jagadishpur Lake in Kapilvastu in order to boost tourism activities. The construction project, however, was approved without conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA), according to Badganga Irrigation Division Office.
The contract was issued by the Department of Tourism to Kalpabriksya/Jalukeni JV Kathmandu and the work began on July 6.
City office and traffic police raise millions in fines as parking problem continues to grow
At around 2:30pm on Tuesday, nearly a dozen people were queued on the northern part of the Metropolitan Traffic Division Office where the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has established a counter to collect fines from the people whose vehicles have been impounded for parking violation.
Almost all had but one complaint: The City Police lifted their motorcycles from roadsides without any prior notice.
After a brief respite, ruling party sees turmoil again
Though things might appear to have calmed down, party insiders say there is still turbulence within the ruling Nepal Communist Party. One manifestation of this ongoing churning has been a failure to appoint the heads of the party’s various departments.
An informal meeting of former UML leaders in the party on Wednesday failed to select the heads of several party departments after a dispute arose between Prime Minister and party Co-chair KP Sharma Oli and senior party leader Madhav Kumar Nepal. Oli had proposed Bishnu Rimal, Goma Devkota and Mahesh Basnet to lead the labour, women and youth departments, respectively. But Nepal disagreed, said one ruling party leader. The party has also failed to select the leadership for other important departments like organisation, school, and foreign.
Dairy farmers price gouged by cooperatives
Khimlal Pandey, a farmer from Shankhar Nagar in Tilottama Municipality of Rupandehi districts sells 80-90 litres of raw milk to Shankhar Nagar Dairy Cooperative daily. The cooperative buys milk at a rate of Rs45 to Rs50 per litre from Pandey and moments later the cooperative sells the collected milk at Rs65 per litre.
Three kilometres away, in the town centre of Butwal, the same milk sold by Pandey to the cooperative is sold to the general public for as high as Rs 80 per litre.
Records tumble on the final day of weightlifting championship
Nepal Police Club athlete Tara Devi Pun was one of the many lifters to set new national records on the final day of the 3rd Nepal’s Strongest Sunil Lal Joshi Memorial Weightlifting Championships here on Wednesday.
Pun clinched the senior women’s 76kg weight division gold medal with a total lift of 170kg. She lifted 72kg in snatch and 98kg in clean & jerk, which was a new national record. Jayanta Shrestha of APF Club finished in a distant second with a total lift of 115kg while Kalpana Chaudhary bagged a bronze with a total lift of 9okg.
Another Nepal Police lifter Laxmi Bam set three national records in senior women’s 81kg division. Bam clinched gold medal lifting 65kg in snatch and 83kg in clean & jerk for a total of 148kg. All three were new national records. Man Kumari Kumal of Army Club claimed silver with a total lift of 123kg.
