Records tumble on the final day of weightlifting championship

Nepal Police Club athlete Tara Devi Pun was one of the many lifters to set new national records on the final day of the 3rd Nepal’s Strongest Sunil Lal Joshi Memorial Weightlifting Championships here on Wednesday.
Pun clinched the senior women’s 76kg weight division gold medal with a total lift of 170kg. She lifted 72kg in snatch and 98kg in clean & jerk, which was a new national record. Jayanta Shrestha of APF Club finished in a distant second with a total lift of 115kg while Kalpana Chaudhary bagged a bronze with a total lift of 9okg.
Another Nepal Police lifter Laxmi Bam set three national records in senior women’s 81kg division. Bam clinched gold medal lifting 65kg in snatch and 83kg in clean & jerk for a total of 148kg. All three were new national records. Man Kumari Kumal of Army Club claimed silver with a total lift of 123kg.
Asmita Rai of Nepali Army also set three national records in senior women’s above 87kg division. Rai had 58kg in snatch and 70kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 128kg, all of which were new national records. Sudha Thapa of Nepal Police won silver with 120kg total lift. Manita Chaudhary of Siraha bagged a bronze with 102kg total lift.
Sarada Chaudhary of Nepali Army also shattered three new national records on her way to clinch the senior women’s 64kg division title. Chaudhary lifted 61kg in snatch and 83kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 144kg, all of which in new national records. Her Army teammate Manisha Ranabhat claimed silver with a total lift of 127kg, while Junu Maya Chhantyal of Nepal Police won a bronze with a total lift of 121kg.
Kamala Shrestha, another Army lifter, won the senior women’s 59kg division gold medal with a total lift of 140kg. Sarita Lama of APF finished in a distant second with a total lift of 77kg and Pushpa Chaudhary of Siraha third with a total lift of 55kg. In all, 23 new national records were set in the women’s event over the last two days.
Nepal Police lifter Prakash KC also set three records on his way to clinch the junior men’s 67kg division title. KC lifted 106kg in snatch and 125kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 231kg. Niraj Gupta of Birgunj United won silver with a total lift of 160kg and Kiran Gharti Magar of Kaski bagged bronze with 131kg total lift.
Raju Chaudhary of Nepali Army also set three national records in winning the senior men’s 61kg division gold medal. Chaudhary lifted 94kg in snatch and 120kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 214kg. Mui Lama of Nepal Police won silver with a total lift of 187kg while Arun Kumar Rajbanshi of Morang won bronze with a total lift of 155kg.
Tularam Budhamagar of Army club also set national records in snatch as well as in total lift on his way to claim the senior men’s 55kg division title. Budhamagar lifted 90kg in snatch and 95kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 185kg. With just two competitors on fray in the weight division, Gopal Rai won silver with a total lift of 110kg.
Armyman Jeevan Tamang struck the senior men’s 67kg division gold medal with a total lift of 191kg. His teammate Santosh Thapaliya took silver with a total lift of 190kg and Dhan Bahadur Jhakri Magar claimed bronze with 183kg total lift. Tushar Budhamagar of Banke won the junior men’s 61kg gold medal with a total lift of 172kg. Ramesh Jha won silver and Rajkumar Sah Kanu claimed bronze medal in the weight division. Lal Babu Paswan struck gold medal in junior men’s 55kg division after a successful total lift of 157kg. Dhiraj Kumar Gupta (145kg) and Ram Kumar Tharu (136kg) completed the podium finishes in the division.
Sangita Rai of Nepal Police was declared thebest lifter in senior women’s category while her clubmate Sanju Chaudhary wasadjudged the best in the junior women’s category. The championships offered 40gold medals: 20 each in men’s and women’s weight divisions.
