Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has claimed that the KP Sharma Oli-led government is attempting to muzzle press freedom.Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has claimed that the KP Sharma Oli-led government is attempting to muzzle press freedom.
“Attempts have been made, directly or indirectly, to attack the press in the country. The government is trying to intimidate the press to impose self-censorship. We have to take it as a move against democracy,” said Deuba, while addressing the district convention of Nepali Press Union in Lamjung on Monday. Stating that free press and democracy are inseparable, the parliamentary party leader of the main opposition party threatened to launch protests against the government if they attempted to curb freedom of expression.
At the event, the NC chief spent most of his time in criticising the government. “The present government has failed to provide security and safety to its citizens, which is evident in the government protecting the culprits involved in the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant,” said Deuba, claiming that criminal activities like rape and murder increased in the country with the formation of the Oli government.
