A man convicted of gang-raping a girl at Bijouri in Dang district has been arrested after 10 years.
Police arrested Bishnu Chaudhary, 31, of Tulsipur sub-metropolitan city on Thursday. He has been sent to Ghorahi prison following his arrest.
Supreme Court on March 13, 2016, had convicted Chaudhary of raping Kalpana Khanal of Ghadawa and also fined Rs 50,000 for the crime. A group of seven men including Chaudhary had gang-raped Khanal, 17, on March 28, 2009. Khanal, of Gadhawa in Dang, died after 84 days while receiving treatment. She was walking to a relative’s home in Tulsipur due to a general strike and was raped by the men.
Despite the court’s conviction, Chaudhary was roaming freely in the district due to his political connection. He was running a children’s home in Bijauri and was also a member of a student wing of the then CPN (Maoist Centre).
Police said they are also investigating Chaudhary over the attack of officials of Nepal Sanskrit University and vandalising and stealing the university’s properties. Five others convicted of the crime have already been arrested while one is still on the run.
