The main opposition Nepali Congress has drawn the government’s attention to address the demands raised by Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a hunger strike, at the earliest.

Accusing the government of turning a blind eye to the demands of Dr Govinda KC at a time when his health is deteriorating day by day, the Nepali Congress urged the government to resolve the issue by implementing the past agreements signed with him.

In a press conference organised at party office in Sanepa, Lalitpur on Wednesday, NC spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma accused the government of not being serious to address the demands of Dr KC, and urged the latter to resolve the issue pronto.

“It is sad and condemnable that the government is reluctant to address the demands of Dr Govinda KC at a time when his health is deteriorating further,” said Sharma. “Nepali Congress condemns government’s such tendency, and urges to implement the past agreements.”

He said the important provisions have been removed from the Medical Education Bill due to the double role of Prime Minister. “It is sad that the agreement which was inked at the initiative of the Prime Minister was not implemented in letter in spirit,” he added.

Sharma said the Prime Minister is trying to move ahead with the power of majority instead of fulfilling his promise.

He said the Medical Education Bill should be implemented in line with the recommendations of a task force led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema, former vice-chancellor at Tribhuvan University.

Senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Dr Govinda KC, has been staging his 16th hunger strike in Ilam since January 9. KC resorted to the fast-unto-death after Education and Health Committee of the Legislature Parliament endorsed the report on Medical Education Bill against the agreement signed with him.

Earlier in June, KC had begun his 15th hunger strike at Karnali Academy of Health Sciences in Jumla. He was later brought to Kathmandu after his condition worsened.
