Doctors attending to Dr Govinda KC have said he should immediately be taken to a well-facilitated hospital because of his critical health condition. KC on Monday was on the sixth day of his 16th hunger strike. 

He was admitted to Ilam District Hospital on Monday morning after he contracted pneumonia. Dr Bijendra Krishna Shah, medical superintendent at the hospital, said KC should be kept at the Intensive Care Unit as he is also suffering from low blood oxygen level, low blood pressure and arrhythmia.

“We have managed primary health service for Dr KC. However, if his health further deteriorates, his treatment will not be possible at the District Hospital,” said Shah.

According to Shah, the anti-corruption crusader has infections in his lungs and throat, an unstable heart beat and a weak immunity system. The District Hospital has already informed the local administration about KC’s health condition, he said.

Shah said the District Hospital does not have modern medical facilities such as ICU, medical specialists or high graded medicines required for a heart patient.

Meanwhile, KC has insisted on continuing his fast-unto-death in Ilam.

He said that he won’t leave the district at any cost. Dr KC reiterated that he would not call off his Satyagraha unless the government implements the agreement reached during his 15th hunger strike.

KC’s supporters and well wishers accused the government of being apathetic as the surgeon’s health fails.

A rally was taken out in Ilam Bazaar on Monday as well to express solidarity with KC. The rally converged into a corner meeting after moving around the town. Addressing the meet, the speakers urged the government to immediately address Dr KC’s demand and save him.

KC has been demanding the government to implement the Medical Education Bill in its entirety, as agreed by the government team that persuaded KC to end his 27-day long 15th hunger strike.

He started his 16th hunger strike from a private house in Ilam on Wednesday after the Education and Health Committee of Parliament endorsed the contested report with added provisions on the bill. The discussion on the contested report and added provisions will begin in the next Parliament meeting scheduled for January 18.
