A motorable bridge over the Sandhi stream at Barhabise Bazaar along Araniko Highway was swept away on Saturday night, disrupting vehicular movement and cutting off the northern part of Sindhupalchok district, including Tatopani.
The bridge connecting Barhabise and Khursani bazaar had been “slightly damaged” by the flooded stream early on Saturday. “The flooded Sandhi stream swept away the bridge at around 10pm,” said Subas Shrestha of Bahrabise Bazaar.
According to him, huge boulders blocked the stream, which diverted the floodwaters to the bazaar area affecting around two dozen houses. Area Police Office in Bahrabise said four houses on the bank of the stream are at high risk.
The stream brought landslide debris from upstream to the Bahrabise area. Four excavators have been used to remove the landslide debris, police said.
Ashok Tiwari, chief at the Division Road Office in Charikot said preparations are under way to clear the debris in the area and resume transportation by making a diversion. “We cannot install Bailey bridge immediately,” he added. (PR)
