After a major Cabinet expansion on Friday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday instructed ministers, state ministers, his advisors and top government officials including security chiefs to work effectively.
Addressing a joint meeting of ministers and secretaries on the Prime Minister’s Office premises in Singha Durbar for the first time after he assumed office on February 15, PM Oli said his team had no liberty to “not achieve results”.
Oli, who has the backing of three-fourths members at the House of Representatives, hinted that he would not tolerate any wrongdoing by ministers.
“All your activities will be monitored at different layers. I’ll also be watching. If I find anything wrong, you won’t get an excuse,” the prime minister is learnt to have warned the top officials.
Secretaries attending the meeting said they had got hints that the PM would not tolerate corruption.
“This is a fortunate team as it has got the opportunity to undertake a historic responsibility. We must complete our tasks utilising every minute, and each drop of our resources and energy,” Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali quoted the PM as saying.
Oli clarified that the government would take suggestions from all without being influenced by any.
“The nation won’t be built by working with a traditional mindset since the government has an extraordinary responsibility,” Oli told the meeting. He made it clear to the ministers and secretaries that they would be held responsible for their works.
He asked the ministries to coordinate with each other for better results. Every service should be delivered according to the law and regulations. Oli urged his team to set goals before doing any work and watch results. There would be no excuses for failure to achieve the set goals, he warned.
He warned secretaries not to visit politicians requesting promotion and transfer. “If you reach leaders’ doorsteps seeking promotion and transfer, your score will rather decrease,” the prime ministers told the secretaries.
Oli stressed the importance of getting migrant workers to use the formal channel of remitting their money from aboard as it would raise billions of rupees more in revenues. The PM announced that the government would have “zero tolerance”
against corruption.
