Former PM Oli hospitalised for tests, ex-home minister Lekhak in custody
Medical professionals at TUTH said the UML chair is being monitored by a specialist team of cardiologists and nephrologists.Post Report
Former prime minister and CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli has been admitted to Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for medical observation shortly after being taken into police custody on Saturday morning.
Oli was apprehended from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, following the government’s decision to implement the recommendations of a high-level commission chaired by Gauri Bahadur Karki, which investigated the state’s handling of the “Gen Z” protests on September 8–9.
Medical professionals at TUTH said Oli, a two-time kidney transplant recipient, is being monitored by a specialist team of cardiologists and nephrologists.
“Upon arrival, the former prime minister complained of abdominal pain and an increased heart rate,” a physician involved in his treatment said. “Preliminary X-rays have revealed a stone in his abdomen, which may be the cause of the pain.”
Doctors are also conducting echocardiograms and renal function tests. Given his history of immunosuppressive medication and a previous angioplasty, he has been kept in a hospital cabin to mitigate the risk of infection. A decision on his discharge will be made after all test results are reviewed.
Lekhak was arrested at his residence in Katunje, Suryabinayak. Lekhak had been residing there after his previous home was damaged in an arson attack during the Gen Z unrest.
Family sources confirmed that Lekhak is currently being held at the Nepal Police No. 2 Battalion in Maharajgunj.
The Karki-led commission had recommended criminal investigations into both leaders, alleging that “negligent and reckless” actions during their tenure led to significant human casualties during the September protests.
As Saturday is a public holiday, police sources said both Oli and Lekhak are expected to be produced before the court on Sunday to seek remand for further investigation.
