Talking to journalists at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in the Capital on Wednesday, he said that it would be meaningless to hold elections in two phases which was announced for single phase on November 26 earlier.
“The elections for November 26 were announced by incorporating the Elections Commission’s proposal,” he said, adding, “I don’t see any necessity to hold the polls in two phases.”
Leader Oli, also a former Prime Minister, criticised the government for taking the decision unilaterally without consulting the major political parties.
He said that there will be problem of security of ballot boxes if the two elections are held in a long gap.
A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday approved the Election Commission's proposal to hold provincial and parliamentary elections in two phases—on November 26 and December 7.
Earlier, EC had proposed two dates for the elections citing logistical management and weather condition. The government on August 21 had decided to hold the two elections on the same date-November 26.
