The government has provided compensation to two persons who were tortured in police custody in Banke district.
As per the verdict of the Banke District Court, the government compensated Nijamuddin Shesh of Koriyanpur in Nepalgunj and Harikala Pun of Motipur in Bardiya. Shesh and Pun received Rs 91,000 and Rs 51,000 respectively.
Chief District Officer of Banke Rabilal Pantha handed over the amount to the torture victims on Tuesday.
“The compensation amount was allocated following our repeated request,” he said.
Shesh, who was arrested on abduction charge, had filed a case in the court after suffering a rib fracture in police beating.
Similarly, Pun had suffered from fractured arm during “police interrogation”. She was charged and later convicted on human trafficking charge and currently serving a jail sentence.
The court had announced its verdict in May, 2013.
Besides providing compensation to the victims, the court had also ordered departmental actions against the police personnel involved in the tortures. Sources, however, said that the concerned officers never faced any actions.
“The court should make sure that the officers who tortured me are punished,” Pun said.
