Incidents of flood and landslide triggered by heavy rains in Syangja, Mahottari, Sunsari and Sarlahi in the last 48 hours killed at least six people. Three people are missing and feared dead.
In Syangja, four members of a single family were buried alive in a landslide triggered by torrential rain at Kevarebhanjyang VDC-7 on Sunday. District Police Office said 78-year-old Chandra Kala Saru, her grand-daughter, Humkala Masyangdi, 32, Humkala’s seven-year-old daughter Punam and one-year-old son Milan died in the incident.
Superintendent of Police Dev Bahadur Bogati said the landslide had occurred just above their house at night. Five family members managed to escape from the disaster.
The bodies of victims were retrieved and sent to Waling Primary Health Centre for post-mortem, said police.
In Mahottari, two people died after being swept away by the rain-swollen Maraha stream and the Ratu river on Saturday evening.
Police said 7-year-old Manab Balun died after the flooded Maraha stream swept him away at Bardibash. His body was found 5 km downstream at Tuteshwor.
Similarly, 50-year-old Pabitra Mahara died after he was swept away by the flooded Ratu river at Pashupatinagar. Police found his body in Sitapur VDC-3.
In Sunsari, two children of a same family are missing after they drowned in a stream on Saturday.
Eight-year-old Manit Mandal and six-year-old Babita Mandal of Narsingh VDC-1 are missing in the incident, police said.
In Sarlahi, a teenage girl went missing in a flooded Lakhandehi river on Saturday evening. Police said 13-year-old Bishekha Mahara was swept away by the flooded river while crossing the flooded river.
Sinkhole causes house to cave in
POKHARA: A 10 feet deep sinkhole caused a house to cave in at Chipledhunga in Pokhara, on Sunday morning. The house occupants and their neighbours were forced to evacuate after the incident. In another incident, a house was swept away by a flooded stream in Deurali VDC-2, Kaski.
