A group of protesters belonging to Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha vandalised and looted Shree Ganesh Food Industry at Bahuarbabhatha in Parsa on Saturday, saying that the industry processed and sold rice during banda.
Locals said there was a dispute between protesters and the owner of the industry on Friday night while the latter was loading two trucks of rice. The trucks were later escorted to the bazaar area.
Witnesses said the group damaged locks and entered the industry premises on Saturday morning. They said the protesters looted some sacks of rice and hurled stones at police who arrived at the scene. The security personnel fired around three dozens of bullets into the air to bring the situation under control. Jakir Husain, a worker at
the industry, said the enraged protesters vandalised motorcycle, generator, machines and furniture.
According to the District Police Office, protesters looted around 150 sacks of rice from the industry. “When security personnel reached there, protesters fled away carrying sacks on their heads. Some of them left the sacks unattended in the farmlands,” police said.
Superintendent of Police Rajbabu Shrestha said the situation has now come under control. Likewise, supporters of Madhes-based parties also torched a cargo truck (Na 4 Kha 635) at Aadrashanagar in Birgunj Submetropolis-13. The truck’s frontal part has been destroyed in the incident.
Meanwhile, looting incidents have increased in Birgunj and surrounding villages in the past couple of days. A group of people looted 45 cooking gas cylinders from a vehicle at Aalau two weeks ago.
Later, 200 of chickens were also looted in the same area. In Pipara, fruits were looted from a cart last week. Authorities said some people are involved in looting incidents due to continuous banda for the past 64 days.
