The supporters of Samykta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) clashed with security forces at Chandranigahapur in Rautahat district on Friday. A protester sustained bullet injuries in the confrontation.
Anil Singh, local leader of Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, said one of the rubber bullets fired by the security forces hit Bhagya Narayan Mahato of Bishrampur-6 suffered in his head. Two other demonstrators were also hurt, he added.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manoj Kumar Yadav and Constable Shekh Jokhu were also hurt when the Morcha supporters hurled stones at them.
Police said the clash ensued when they tried to stop the protesters from blocking the East-West Highway. Hundreds of Morcha activists, Tharu and Muslim people were marching towards the highway to disrupt the transportation along the highway.
Security forces fired 20 rounds of bullets in the air and lobbed 15 tear gas canisters to disperse the mob.
DSP Yadav said they were compelled to open fire as the protesters were throwing bottles and stones.
Various Madhes-based parties and some ethnic groups have been protesting against the seven-state federal set-up and the new constitution for the past seven weeks.
In Dhanusha , the Morcha supporters staged demonstrations in various parts of Janakpur. Expressing solidarity to the indefinite protest, Madhes Civil Society Struggle Committee also took to the street.
Curfew lifted in Jaleshwor
MAHOTTARI: The local administration has lifted curfew at Jaleshwor, the district headquarters of Mahottari, after 25 days on Friday. Chief District Officer Dipak Kafle said the district security committee meeting decided to lift the curfew after concluding that the situation in area has become normal. The local administration had clamped curfew in Jaleshwor since September 9 following a violence during the Morcha protest. The curfew was extended after the death of six protesters and an Armed Police Force personnel.
