Kono assures continued Japanese support

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono returned home after completing his two-day Nepal visit on Thursday. During the visit, Kono met with President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other senior government officials.
Oli extended Kono a birthday wish when the visiting Japanese minister reached Baluwatar on Thursday to pay a courtesy call on the prime minister. During the meeting, Oli and Kono discussed various aspects of Nepal-Japan bilateral relations, regional and global issues of common concerns, according to the Foreign Ministry.
While sharing the recent political achievements and priorities of the government, Oli appreciated the government of Japan for its continued support and cooperation in socio-economic development of Nepal. He urged Kono to extend support in Nepal’s development priority areas, including agriculture, energy generation and infrastructure development.
Kono stressed the need for development of regional organisations like SAARC and BIMSTEC, while expressing Japan’s readiness for support. Also figured in the meeting were expansion of Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel road stretch, construction of Nagdhunga-Naubise tunnel works, employment opportunity for Nepali workers in Japan. Kono assured Japan’s continued assistance to Nepal in realising its development goals, the statement added.
On Wednesday, during the bilateral talks between Foreign Minister Gyawali and Kano agreed to revise the Air Service Agreement signed between the two countries in 1993. The signing of Exchange of Notes in this regard will pave the way for the resumption of direct flights between the two countries.
Similarly, the foreign ministers signed a memorandum of cooperation on conducting bilateral consultations. The memorandum will provide a platform for both countries to discuss modalities on extending cooperation, review all aspects of bilateral relations, and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concerns, according to the Foreign Ministry.
