Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav has directed the representatives of non-governmental organisations not to engage in any activities that could influence candidates and voters during the upcoming local level polls.
At a programme organised in the Capital to inform NGO representatives about the election code of conduct applicable to them until the May 14 vote is over, CEC Yadav urged them to follow the code and to make judicious utilisation of the money and other resources donated by donor agencies for the people. The code of conduct comes into effect on April 28.
He urged the organisations and INGOs not to launch any new programme and to put the ongoing programmes on hold during the election.
Election Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Shah underscored the need to comply with the election code in order to help make the election free and fair and to ensure security of voters, observers and officials deployed at the polling station.
According to him, the election code takes references from the codes prepared by other South Asian, and African countries.
There are more than 35,000 NGOs and 145 INGOs registered with the Social Welfare Council.
