UNESCO weighs whether to put Kathmandu in endangered heritage list
The 39th session of Unesco World Heritage Committee, which begins on Sunday in the Bonn, Germany, is set to decide whether to put the Kathmandu Valley in the List of World Heritage in DangerAll of the seven archaeologically, historically, culturally and religiously significant sites of the Valley that were included in the World Heritage list in 1979 have sustained damage due to the April 25 earthquake. Among them, the Durbar Squares of Basantapur, Patan and Bhaktapur, Swayambhunath Stupa and Changu Narayan Temple have suffered considerable destructions, while Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple sustained relatively minor damages.
At the session, Unesco is presenting its report on the current status of the sites and the committee will review it to decide the fate of the Kathmandu Valley. Inclusion in the List of World Heritage in Danger is expected to raise international awareness on the matter and to encourage counteractive measures. Alternately, this could discourage tourists to visit the heritage sites.
