Nepal sets highest single day Covid-19 record with 2,722 new cases; 11 more fatalities take death toll to 520
Kathmandu Valley reported 1,638 new infections, highest number of cases for the second day in a row, according to the Health Ministry.Post Report
Nepal on Friday reported a record 2,722 new Covid-19 cases as the national tally reached 82,450. The country also reported 11 deaths, pushing the coronavirus death toll to 520.
Seven men and four women died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
Two women, aged 61 and 51, from Bhaktapur; a 67-year-old woman from Kathmandu; and a 75-year-old woman from Surkhet died of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.
Two men, aged 32 and 70, from Lalitpur; two others, aged 52 and 59, from Banke; a 27-year-old man from Morang; a 60-year-old man from Rupandehi; and a 78-year-old man from Makwanpur also succumbed to the disease.
So far, 60,696 individuals have made successful recovery—3,307 of them in the past 24 hours. As of Friday, there are 21,234 active cases.
According to the ministry, the Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,638 new infections, the highest single-day spike. Of them, 1,280 were confirmed in Kathmandu, 196 in Bhaktapur and 162 in Lalitpur.
As of Friday, the number of cases in the Valley has reached 26,741. A total of 24,243 cases have been detected after the three district administration offices in Kathmandu Valley imposed prohibitory orders starting August 19 midnight.
The country has seen 64,456 infections and 480 deaths since July 22. There were 17,994 cases and 40 Covid-19-related deaths until July 21, when the government decided to end the nationwide lockdown after four months.
According to the ministry, 198 individuals from Bagmati Province, 131 from Province 2, 86 from Province 5, 60 from Province 1, 26 from Gandaki Province, 13 from Sudurpaschim Province, and six from Karnali Province have died of Covid-19 so far.
As of Friday, the 1,048,686 PCR tests have been carried out across the country.
“A total of 14,739 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours,” Dr Jageshwar Gautam, spokesperson for the ministry, said during a regular press briefing.
In the past 24 hours, 1,280 individuals in Kathmandu, 196 in Bhaktapur, 162 in Lalitpur, 150 in Morang, 122 in Surkhet, 92 in Rupandehi, 83 in Chitwan, 70 in Banke, 55 in Makwanpur, 28 in Dang, 26 in Gulmi, 24 in Parsa, 23 each in Jhapa, Sunsari, Kavrepalanchok, Dhading and Nawalparasi (West), 22 in Siraha, 16 in Nawalparasi (East), 15 each in Saptari and Darchula, 14 each in Bara and Lamjung, 13 each in Sindhuli, Kaski and Kailali, 12 in Baglung, 11 each in Nuwakot, Palpa and Pyuthan, and 10 each in Sindhupalchok, Arghakhanchi and Dailekh, tested positive for the coronavirus infection.
Infections were also confirmed in nine people in Bardiya, eight each in Achham and Doti, seven each in Tanahun, Kapilvastu and Kanchanpur, six each in Mahottari, Sarlahi and Jumla, five each in Dhanusa and Bajhang, and four each in Rautahat and Gorkha districts.
Likewise, three persons each in Ramechhap, Myagdi, Kalikot and Baitadi, two each in Udayapur, Terhathum, Dolakha, Syangja and Rolpa, and one each in Khotang, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Parbat and Bajura, also tested positive for the virus.
“Seven districts—Morang, Siraha, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan and Rupandehi—have more than 500 active cases,” Gautam said. “Three districts—Manang, Mustang and Dolpa—don’t have any active cases.”
“As of Friday, 210 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units across the country and 29 patients—22 in Bagmati, four in Province 5, two in Province 1 and one in Province 2—are on ventilator support.”
Nepal on Thursday reported 1,911 new cases and 11 Covid-19-related deaths compared to 1,559 new infections and seven deaths on Wednesday and 1,513 new infections and 10 deaths on Tuesday.
