The sixth season of Air_Mcube artists in residence is currently being held at Gallery Mcube in Chakupat, Patan. For this season the exhibition is hosting a team called M, made of four visual artists; performance director and media artist Kim Jae Min, dancer and choreographer Wonjung Jang, actor and performer Park Byung Ho, and contemporary choreographer Chong Eun Hye; all from Korea.
The exhibition is based on the principles of Tableau Vivant—a sub-genre in art that means, “Living picture”. This sort of art combines photography and videography. It is based on the placeness, overlapping temporarily in massive photographic image, using screen and accepting in the term of proscenium. With projection mapping on an image, the artwork gains new life altogether
The solo, wall sized art on display at the exhibition features a picture of the Bhimsen Temple in Patan Durbar Square, and projected on it are moving silhouettes of people that seem to be renovating the temple.
Manish Lal Shrestha, the director of Gallery Mcube who is an artist himself said, “Artworks such as the ones made by M are very unique and we seldom get to see such rare and contemporary visual art in Nepal. I am happy to host such genre of art. The visitors have also given us positive feedbacks regarding the exhibition.”
Gallery Mcube was established in 2011 and it exclusively features visual and contemporary artworks. It regularly conducts programmes such as Little Artist Workshop and Artist in Residence. Shrestha added, “Rare and unappreciated genres of art as such are in need of limelight and we help in doing just that.”
Sajana Baral, a visitor at the gallery said, “I liked the concept of portraying people’s labor via animated art. I like this as it is an ingenious idea.”
The second part of Air_Mcube is a public performance that will take place in Patan Durbar Square on December 28. The performance, titled Dhoka will feature complex body movement combined with media art through projection mapping.
The event will conclude on December 28.
