Kusunda Tribe and Dictionary, a book on the history, language, culture of the endangered Kusunda tribe is all set to hit the stores. The book, which also includes a dictionary of the words Kusunda people use, has been penned by Uday Raj Ale. While preparing the book, author Ale researched about the history and present status of Kusunda tribe for more than five years.
The book talks about, among other things, Kusunda tribe’s birth, marriage, and death rituals, their traditions, social relations, and other facts related to the tribe. Currently lying in parts of Gorkha, Tanahu, Argakhachi, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Dang, Deukuri and Surkhet, Kusunda’s population is diminishing. According to a survey carried out in 2068 BS, there are only 262 Kusunda people currently in Nepal. Anthropologists suspect that if they too are neglected, as they have been in the past, they are soon going to be extinct.
Having spent most of their lives in jungles, Kusunda like to call themselves the kings of the jungle. Author Ale, after spending several years with them, chose to write this book to motivate Kusunda people to accept their uniqueness and legacy and to report their current status to concerned authorities so that they can take steps to prevent the extinction of their tribe and their heritage.
