Drivers’ carelessness is the main reason behind most road accidents in the Kathmandu Valley, according to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division.
The information shared by the division reveals that in more than 90 percent of the road accidents, drivers’ carelessness was to blame.
In the last fiscal year (2074/75), the division recorded 6,381 road accidents. Among them, drivers were culpable in 5,961 cases. Similarly, high speed caused 71 accidents, mechanical failures caused 221, careless overtaking 29, pedestrians’ recklessness three, and road condition 48.
SSP Basanta Kumar Pant said drivers were not abiding by the traffic rules and were driving carelessly that resulted in the road accidents.
He added, “Narrow roads were also responsible for the accidents.”
Among the 1.1 million vehicles registered in the Bagmati Zone, nearly 800,000 vehicles operate in the Kathmandu Valley. Last year alone, 194 people lost their lives in road accidents— 147 men and 47 women.
