Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC staged a protest—the second one in as many weeks—at Maitighar Mandala in the Capital on Saturday, demanding the government to roll back its decision to ban holding demonstrations there.
On April 15, the District Administration Office Kathmandu had declared Maitighar Mandala as a protest exclusion zone. Under the new rule in line with the directive issued by the Home Ministry, people can now only hold protest assemblies at Khullamanch, Tinkune, Bhuinkhel Chaur,Bagwanpau, Pepsicola Ground, Sano Gaucharan Ground and Lainchaur and Siphal Chaur.
On Saturday, Dr KC along with his supporters protesting the government move saying it has curtailed people’s fundamental right to assemble and freedom of expression. Reiterating that Maitighar Mandala has always been the city’s most popular site to hold protest assemblies and vigils for years, Dr KC demanded the government to immediately renege on the decision.
On the occasion, Dr KC also demanded the Education Ministry to appoint vice-president at the Medical Education Commission before holding a common entrance for medical students.
Similarly, he called on the authorities concerned to take action against 43 people involved in irregularities in the medical sector as recommended by the probe committee under the Medical Commission, reduce the time of a post-graduate doctor’s serving period for the government to two years, implement laws to stop violence against doctors, return the rights of Institute of Medicine and scrap Scholarship Management and Mobilisation Procedure. He has vowed to continue his protest every week until the government responds to his memorandums.
