According the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), 1,103 motorcycle riders were booked for violating traffic rules while five private cars and 83 two wheelers were arrested for drunk driving.
Police booked 73 people for riding motorbike without wearing helmet, 195 motorcyclists for riding three people, 36 for over speeding and the rest were booked for lane violations and riding the bikes without proper documents.
DSP Mukunda Marasini at the MTPD said 10 motorcycle accidents were reported on Thursday. Among the victims, one was severely injured and taken to Trauma Centre of Bir Hospital for treatment.
Under the prevailing law, those booked for drunk driving will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and attend an hour-long class on road safety. According to DSP Marasini, those booked for riding without a helmet, over speeding, without documents will have to pay a fine of Rs500 and attend an hour-long class. “All of them [booked drivers] will be given a class on Friday,” he said. The traffic police had carried out monitoring at 69 places in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.
