A total of 32 tonnes of solid waste was extracted from various rivers and areas around the Ring Road in the Valley on Saturday as part of the ongoing weekly cleaning campaign.

Five tonnes of waste was managed from the Manohara confluence on Saturday that marked the 245th week of the Bagmati clean-up campaign. Around 450 people, including founder of the Bagmati Clean-up Mega Campaign and Nepali Ambassador to China Lila Mani Poudel and Chair of the High-powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee took part in the cleaning of the sacred Bagmati river, according to campaigner Mala Kharel.

Likewise, the clean-up campaign above Guheshwari reached its 206th week on Saturday, with a tonnes of solid waste being scooped out of the Gothatar bridge area. Pudasaini Maitri Samaj, Ramro Jorpati Hamro Jorpati and other initiatives took part in the cleaning, according to campaigner Uttam Pudasaini.

Meanwhile, the 151st week of cleaning of the Bagmati river in the Tilganga area saw a door-to-door campaign raising public awareness about the need to keep home-produced solid waste away from the rivers. During the campaign, the locals were notified that anyone found littering the rivers will be penalized, said Asha Pandey, a campaigner.

The Rudramati cleaning campaign marked its 200th week on Saturday by holding an awareness rally that began from Ratopul and passed through Gyaneswar, Kamal Pokhari, Dillibazaar and ended on the Maitidevi temple premises. The participants of the rally also managed a tonne of solid waste in the process, according to Vice President of Rudramati Sarokar Samaj Rohit Giri. More than 250 people participated in the initiative led by campaigner Bigyan Raj Sharma.

Similarly, 15 tonnes of solid waste was managed on the 41st week of Ring Road cleaning campaign on Saturday, collecting waste from Chabahil to Sukedhara. Around 350 people took part in the initiative, according to campaigner Lok Bahadur Tandon. Besides, the volunteers, with the help of Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation, also removed old vehicles left unattended on the sides of the Ring Road.

Another 10 tonnes of solid waste was managed from the areas in Syuchatar and Sitapaila.
