The Supreme Court on Tuesday sent Chudamani Sharma, the suspended director general of the Inland Revenue Department, to judicial custody. Sharma was arrested on June 2 on charge of misappropriating revenue and settling taxes in a questionable way and has been in custody of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) since. A full bench of SC Justices Deepak Raj Joshi, Deepak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Sharada Prasad Ghimire and Anil Kumar Sinha issued the order to send Sharma to judicial custody. The bench was responding to a writ of habeas corpus filed by Sharma’s wife Kalpana Upreti on July 11 demanding his release. The CIAA has filed a Rs 10-billion graft case against Sharma as well as LD Mahat and Umesh Dhakal, charging the trio with settling tax in a questionable way in capacity of members of the Tax Settlement Commission formed by the government in February 2015.
