Gyawali has been recognised for his reports exposing malpractices and corruption in the governance of the medical education sector in Nepal, said a statement issued by Sanduk Ruit, chairman of the Barbara Peace Foundation Nepal. The award carries a purse of Rs 100,001.
Thirty-seven journalists from print, radio, television and online media had applied for the award.
Gyawali was chosen by a judges’ panel after three rounds of selection process with the help from TU’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to make the selection fair, inclusive and transparent, according to the Barbara Peace Foundation Nepal.
The award this year is being distributed after a hiatus of two years due to the earthquake and the demise Barbara Adams, the founder of the Barbara Peace Foundation Nepal.
The first edition of the Barbara Adams Investigative Journalism Award was awarded to Surendra Poudel, a correspondent with Nagarik daily, for his stories that exposed corruption in Nepal.
Barbara Peace Foundation Nepal was set up in 2011 with an objective of providing opportunities and improving the lives of the marginalised Nepalis.
The foundation works in Baitadi and Darchula districts with Dalits and is involved in building houses for the poor and the marginalised.
