A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court against the two ruling parties’ bid to impeach Chief Justice Sushila Karki. Lawyer Sunil Ranjan Singh filed the petition at the apex court on Tuesday, two days after 249 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) registered an impeachment motion against Karki.

The court administration, however, will decide on Wednesday whether to entertain or reject the petition, according to a source at the apex court.

In his petition, Singh has claimed that the impeachment move contravenes Article 105 of the constitution, which says: No discussion shall be held in either House of the Federal Parliament on any matters that may cause adverse effect on the dispensation of justice on any cases which are sub judice in any courts of Nepal and on any judicial acts done by judges in the course of performance of their duties.

One of the charges that the lawmakers have levelled against Karki is that she interfered in the executive’s jurisdiction when she ruled against a Cabinet decision on the appointment of chief of Nepal Police.

Karki, who stands suspended now, was herself involved in the case.

The impeachment motion against the CJ has drawn widespread criticism from several quarters.
