Thapa is a central member of the party.
In a statement on Friday, the party, however, said he would contest the elections as an independent candidate as the new party has not been registered with the Election Commission.
Highlighting his “clean and capable” image, the party stated that any candidate promoting its values and beliefs would be supported. Thapa, who has served in several ministries such as Urban Development, Education and Tourism in various capacities, was free of controversies during his tenure.
Thapa, who hold a master’s degree in Urban Planning, had leading roles in the road widening drive in Kathmandu and expediting the Melamchi Drinking Water project. He was involved in drafting the 20-year energy development plan and preparing the Outer Ring Road Project, among others.
“I wish to make Kathmandu a prosperous, dynamic, beautiful, clean and accessible city,” Thapa said. He would unveil his detailed plans and programme of improving the living conditions in Kathmandu soon.
