The Cabinet meeting has summoned Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi to finalise the appointment of IGP. DPM Nidhi had skipped today's Cabinet meeting due to protocol row with another DPM Kamal Thapa.
The Cabinet meeting has formed a four-member panel to finalise the score of performance evaluation of four Nepal Police Deputy Inspector of Generals (DIGs). Secretary at Home Ministry, secretary at Prime Minister’s office, secretary at Ministry of Law and acting IGP are the members of the panel.
“The final call on the appointment of new IGP will be taken after the committee comes up with its decision,” said a Cabinet member.
Earlier on March 21, the Supreme Court (SC) had revoked the Cabinet’s February 12 decision to appoint Jaya Bahadur Chand as IGP.
Following the decision to appoint Chand as chief of Nepal Police, DIG Nawaraj Silwal, one of the contenders for the IGP post, moved court in response to which the court stayed the government decision.
The SC had indicated in its rulings that Silwal is more qualified than Chand because of his higher marks in performance evaluation and training.
The government on February 13 had appointed AIG Dinesh Chandra Pokharel as acting IGP.
