The government has formed the taskforce under the headship of Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Hitraj Pandey.
A meeting held between Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and ruling parties including the disgruntled Tarai-centric parties' leaders at former's official residence on Tuesday, agreed to extend the taskforce's term aimed at increasing the numbers of local body units.
Following the meeting, Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel said that they suggested settling issues other than the LLRC report as there was no chance the constitution amendment bill would be passed by the Parliament.
He added that they will reach to a conclusion regarding the amendment bill and holding local poll after holding discussions with other parties.
PM Dahal, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, leader Poudel and Madhesi Front leader Mahantha Thakur among others were present in the meeting.
Following the meeting, CPN (Maoist Centre) spokesperson Pampha Bhusal shared that they were planning to extend the term of taskforce to increase the number of local body units being based on population as per the demand of Tarai centric parties.
She added that the Cabinet meeting likely to be held today will extend the term of taskforce.
It may be noted that the Front has been urging to put the local level under provinces while other parties have said it was an autonomous body as per the constitution.
Different nine parties including CPN-UML have opined not to let pass the amendment bill at any cost terming that it was against national interest and need of the people. RSS
