Government attorneys and trade unions of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Justice Sushila Karki, demanding a review of the recommendations made by the Judicial Council (JC). 

The chief justice-led JC on Thursday night recommended 80 persons as High Court (HC) judges. 

Government attorneys and OAG trade unions have taken serious exception to the JC decision, saying that CJ-led constitutional body violated the principle of proportional representation guaranteed by the constitution. 

Of the nine OAG officials who are eligible to become High Court judges, only one has been recommended by the JC. Deputy Attorney General Rajendra Subedi is the only OAG official picked by the JC. Currently, the OAG has four special class officials and 31 first class officials. 

In the memorandum, OAG officials have warned of boycotting all hearings and trials on behalf of the Judicial Council beginning January 22. They have also vowed to step up their protests if their demands are not met. 

At a press meet organised on Monday, the disgruntled government attorneys and OAG officials demanded that the JC make public the criteria based on which it had recommended 80 individuals as High Court judges.
