The man who set a bus he was driving on fire after getting into a dispute with traffic police on Monday had repeatedly used driving licences issued in other people’s names, police said.

After Monday’s incident, police found a driving licence issued in the name of Dawa Lama of Timal, Kavre. But an investigation established that the man was actually Arjun Dong Tamang, a resident of Sisneri in Indrasarowar Rural Municipality of Makawanpur, Superintendent of Police Dilip Ghimire told Kantipur.

According to Ghimire, Tamang was also involved in an incident in Balaju last year in which three people were injured after a bus overturned. “He had been absconding since the incident. At the time, he was using a driving licence issued in the name of Sunil Tamang,” Ghimire said. “About three months ago, he also behaved abusively towards traffic police in the Mulpani area. At that time, he was using a licence issued in the name of Dawa Tamang.”

Dong died at 7pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at the Nepal Cleft and Burn Centre in Kirtipur. 

Shortly after the incident, police broke open the door of his vehicle and entered. He was then rescued and taken to hospital, while firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Hospital officials said 90 percent of his body had been burned when he was brought in for treatment.
