Two government vehicles came under attack during a protest rally organised by Youth Association Nepal (YAN), the youth wing of CPN-UML, in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Friday afternoon.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Narayan Prasad Chimoriya of Metropolitan Police Circle, New Baneshwor, said a Mahindara SUV (Ba 2 Jha 1392) belonging to the High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilisation was set ablaze and a mini SUV (Ba 2 Jha 1055) belonging to the Road Divison Office was vandalised in the incident.
DSP Chimoriya said the attacks were perpetrated by unidentified groups.
However, the footages of the purported attacks that emerged on various online news and social networking sites show some of the attackers carrying flags that belong to the YAN. The footage also shows a group of men throwing bricks on the windscreen of a Nissan truck with government licence plate, but police only confirmed the attacks on two vehicles.
YAN spokesman Prabhat Katuwal denied the involvement of the association members in the attacks. He claimed that their rally was infiltrated by some men who wanted to smear the YAN and the UML with criminal infamy.
